Easter Hat Etiquette - Paul Preston™

Easter Hat Etiquette

Although not as popular as it once was due to more casual church settings, many women still search for the perfect Easter hat to go with their perfect Easter dress. Some hats are extravagant whereas others are quaint and simple. When choosing the right Easter hat there are a few Easter hat rules and etiquette to consider. 1.) Because formal hats, such as Easter hats, can be rather pricey, consider buying a hat that you can add embellishments. Some embellishments may include ribbon, faux flowers, broaches and more. If you already have these things then you save even more money. If you do not have them, then even buying the embellishments is still generally cheaper than buying a ready-made Easter hat. 2.) When it comes to embellishments, there is even an etiquette rule for this. Regardless of the type of embellishment, women wear them on the right and men wear them on the left. Granted men do not wear as flashy of embellishment as women do on their hats. 3.) Next rule in choosing an Easter hat is if your hat screams extravagance, then your Easter dress should be simple. Of course, if your dress is the one making the statement it is best to pick a simple Easter hat that will not distract from your dress. 4.) Don’t be such a perfectionist on matching your Easter hat exactly to your Easter dress. Use the same color scheme and utilize embellishments to pull it all together. For example, if you have a cream-colored dress with a pattern, use a cream color hat and use embellishments to accent it to match the dress. However, if you have a multi-colored Easter dress, pick one of the colors in the dress as your base color to your Easter hat. 5.) If you do choose a large Easter hat, do not sit in the front rows in church. Many people would like to see the minister as he or she preaches. Your grandiose Easter hat, although lovely, can be quiet the distraction or prevent people from focusing on the minister. 6.) Speaking of grandiose Easter hats, remember less is more. Do not choose a hat that is too busy or too flashy. Although you may look great in it, the day is not totally about you and your hat. Save the flashy, pretentious hats for the Kentucky Derby not for Easter. 7.) If you have Easter events that occur during the day and some at night, you should have two hats. The larger hat is used during the day with a larger brim to help shield you from the sun. The nighttime Easter hat should be more subdued. If you cannot afford two hats, just be sure to remove your daytime Easter hat by dusk and go without in the evening. 8.) Storage is important too. Nothing ruins a beautiful Easter hat quicker than just throwing it in a closet. Make sure you use a hatbox that is a perfect size for your hat. Another tip for those on a budget is that if you keep the hat in good condition you can use it again for years to come. All you have to do to make it fresh and new each year is to change the embellishments. The key to Easter hat etiquette is common sense. Do what you can within your budget, be considerate of others, and take care of your hat. Easter should be enjoyed by everyone and if you can save some money in the process, even better.
